Did you know, 1 in 10 people are thinking about leaving their job due to stress?

Back in 2019, I started working with emergency doctors to help them avoid burnout. I think you might find the framework I share useful for sustaining your performance, decision-making, resilience, and well-being.

How to Think About It

Stress compromises your performance, productivity, problem-solving, health, and well being.

Given the issue’s complexity, the solution must be ‘multi-modal.’ It’s not about simple tips; it needs a sophisticated and evidence-based model. Here’s the model I taught emergency doctors in Copenhagen last week. It may seem complicated, but it’s grounded in a simple formula, explained below.

The C-MEP-S Formula Explained

The 5 part formula driving this is simple: C-MEP-S

Where: C = Control, M = Mental Mastery, E = Emotional Mastery, P = Physiological Mastery, and S = Safety (Psychological Safety)

15 Ways to Sustain Your Performance

  1. Focus on what’s without your control.
  2. Prioritise exercise, nutrition, hydration, and sleep.
  3. Master relaxation techniques and breath work.
  4. Practice gratitude.
  5. Prioritise your psychological recovery and wellbeing.
  6. Increase your sense of purpose.
  7. Develop a growth and ownership mindset.
  8. Use cognitive reframing to meet challenges at your best.
  9. Set goals, master your workload and prioritisation.
  10. Master your focus and attention, and manage distractions.
  11. Practise meditation & mindfulness to improve focus and emotional regulation.
  12. Make reflection a regular practice: what’s working and what needs work.
  13. Give your brain sufficient downtime for mental recovery.
  14. Create a culture of psychological safety, support, connection and belonging.
  15. Share this with others.

What It All Comes Down To
